How to connect a Mac OSX computer to the University network while off campus

The Off campus remote access is needed if you require to have a university network address while off campus. You need to have a internet connection with the PPTP (1723) port open to allow a VPN connection to the campus server. Most home Broadband connections such as NTL, BT and AOL will have the port open as default, only companies and other academic institutions may not.

1. Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the status bar at the top right corner of the screen and select Open Network Preferences.

2. Next click the + button. A new pop up should appear.

3. From the interface drop down menu select VPN.
4. From the VPN Type drop down menu select PPTP.
5. For the service name enter SwanseaUni-VPN and then click create.
6. In the right hand panel of the Network Preferences window that should now be visible, set the Server Address to the one specified to you in the registration email.
7. Your Account Name is your email address: (Your Swansea email address)

8. Leave the other option as the default settings and click on Advanced
9. Click the Proxies tab.
10. Tick the Auto Proxy Discovery option.

11. Now click OK. You may be prompted for the Systems User account password.
12. Next click Apply.
13. Then click Connect.
14. You will be prompted for your password. This is your university email account password.
15. You should now be connected to the VPN.


To connect and disconnect to campus VPN network you need to click the 'WiFi icon at the top right of the screen and select Network Preferences. Then select the VPN connection from the list and click connect.

To disconnect you click on the Internet Connect icon and selec disconnect..
