How to connect a Mac OSX computer to the University network while off campus

The Off campus remote access is needed if you require to have a university network address while off campus. You need to have a internet connection with the PPTP (1723) port open to allow a VPN connection to the campus server. Most home Broadband connections such as NTL, BT and AOL will have the port open as default, only companies and other accademic institutions may not.

Setting up a PPTP VPN connection

1. Now click on the VPN icon at the top of Internet Connect.
2. You will now be presented with a choice of a L2TP or PPTP VPN. Select PPTP then click continue.
3. You should now see a VPN(PPTP) icon on Internet Connect. Click it.
4. Click on the Configuration tab and select 'Edit Configurations...' 5. Enter the following information
Description = uws-vpn
Server Address = (or other if you are staff/guest)
Account Name = ''
Password = your password

6. Now Click OK.(If you see a dialog regarding a 'Key Chain', you can either add it or click cancel to ignore it)
7. You will now be brought back to Internet Connect and all the details should be filled in. You can now click 'Connect'.
8. You should now see the Status change to Negotiating and finally connected.

9. Close Internet Connect.

Setting up the Proxy Settings

10. Now back on the Network window (via System Preferences) select VPN(PPTP) from the 'Show:' drop down box.
11. Click the Proxies tab
12. Tick the Web Proxy box and enter a Web Proxy Server of '' with port : '3128'
If you do not use Safari to browse the web you may need to enter the cache settings into your browser itself aswell. This will be different for each broswer.

13. Click 'Apply Now' and you are done.


To connect and disconnect to campus network you need to click the 'Internet Connect icon at the top right of the screen (black rectangle) and if needed select uws-vpn and then click connect.

To disconnect you click on the Internet Connect icon and selec disconnect..
