How to connect a Windows 7/8/10 computer to the VPN service

Right click the network icon in the bottom right of the screen, and choose ‘Open network and sharing center’
Click ‘Set up a new connection or network’ link under the ‘Change your networking settings’
Double click ‘Connect to a workplace’
Click ‘Use my Internet Connections (VPN)’ to open the VPN setup dialogue.

Enter an address of student-vpn.swan.ac.uk or staff-vpn.swan.ac.uk into the ‘Internet address:’ box, and set the ‘Destination name:’ to UWS-VPN, then click ‘Next’
On the next screen, enter your email address and password. Then click connect.

If the connection fails, please check that the security settings detailed below are correct. These settings should be auto negotiated when the VPN is connected, but sometimes this fails in Windows 8 & 10.

From the Desktop view of Windows…
Right click the network icon in the bottom right of the screen, and choose ‘Open network and sharing center’
Click ‘Change adaptor settings’ under ‘Control Panel Home’
Right click the VPN Connection that you created and chose ‘Properties’ from the menu that appears.
Click the ‘Security’ tab.
Ensure that ‘PPTP’ is selected in the ‘Type of VPN’ dropdown.
And that ‘Require encryption (disconnect if server declines)’ is also selected.
Then click ‘OK’ to save the changes.

Then try to connect again by clicking the network icon on the bottom right of the screen, and connecting the VPN in the list.
